Be vague!

Be vague! July 2006

  Dear Nigel,

Yes, be vague.

Don't we say things like this:
- "We can work it out";
- "Things can only get better";
- "Someday, we will all be free";
- "Everyone has got their problems".

You know these type of expressions. They are used by politicians, in sales letters, on the radio, in the horoscope in the paper. They are used because they relax you. You cannot but agree with the highly generalized statements.

This language is used because it gets you into a different state: it distracts you from the outside world. It is particularly useful when you want to connect with a large group or to establish rapport with someone you do not know well.

Being vague

When you are vague:-
- your listeners find their own answers which are more powerful and more enduring for them;
- you do not convey your own ideas or make inappropriate suggestions;
- your customers feel more in control because they are free to explore different possibilities, that you might not have thought of.

While you are talking vague to others, you are also opening up yourself, and this will help you to:-
- discover more empowering ways of acting;
- arouse your natural curiousity;
- find time when you were at your best and takle you back into that resourceful state.

How can you use this?

First by using vague language you create agreement.

Then you become more specific.

When it gets rocky, you can go sideways – tell a story – use a metaphor.

Do they come into agreement?
No: then go vague again.

If they come back into agreement, then you can go more specific again.

Up, down and sideways, until you find agreement.

Try being vague. It may sound strange, but it is important to make that first connection, it is the way we function.

You have an idea about what I am talking about?!!

Nigel coaches people like you to freedom – freedom from limitations, freedom to do/be more, financial freedom, emotional freedom, freedom to be yourself.
