Nigel Buxton Update
Put the black spot in its place March 2006

  Dear Nigel,

By the time you finish this short article you will have a new perspective on the upsets that you encounter in life.

Everyone knows the feeling that the end is coming? The world is about to collapse!

It happens when a relationship has ended - when you failed an exam - a business failed - you failed to get a promotion, or to be admitted into a partnership - you did not do the most important deal of your life (or so it seemed).
You know what I mean - don't you - everybody knows?

It is in such moments of darkness, that you need to remember that the incident is NOT the grand finale to the book: It is just an episode to the main story - a scene in an act of the play.

In such moments you need to stand back and remember and then visualize the BIG PICTURE.

This will put the wretched little incident back in perspective - and the big picture will give you back your strength to pursue what is really important.

Black spot watching

Just picture a clean sheet of A4 paper. Add a black spot the size of your little fingernail somewhere on the paper.

When you look at the sheet of paper doesn't your attention get pulled compellingly to the black spot?

Now imagine that same black spot is somewhere on the wall of your office, maybe you can even find a mark that size on the wall. But now you have to look for it?

Now you are looking at the wall of a large building: and where is that same black spot? How long will it take you to find it now?

The black spot is always the same.
WHAT CHANGES IS THE CONTEXT YOU PUT IT IN!

What you need is your very own big picture (your big life goal) "painted" with as much detail as possible.

You have probably heard this saying: "Life never gives you what you want: it always gives you what you need".

When you have your big picture done, and you are "working" at it: THEN boom - crash - you are knocked to your knees.

Once you have got your breath back - look at the big picture, and at what happened.
What do you see?
Life was giving you a lesson you NEEDED to learn!

Having a big picture there will help you see:
1. it was just a minor incident on "My Journey";
2. "I" needed that lesson to get me to my big life goal and to make me a more complete person.

AN INCIDENT IS NOT THE STORY. Don’t make a book out of one incident!

The setback is also a test of how important your big picture is to you.
Are you going to let a little setback take you off- course, or will you ride on through - stronger and better equipped for your journey?
