Nigel Buxton Update
Unbelievable experience! December 2005

  Dear Nigel,

A belief is like operating software. You hold a belief because, consciously or unconsciously, that is what you want to experience.

You hold many beliefs, some you may like because they are helpful to you:-

  • "I am successful";
  • "I am clever";
  • "I am a good person".

Some you may like less, because they are unhelpful:-

  • "Life is hard";
  • "I never have enough money";
  • "I am not good enough to have /be ________".

Maybe you cannot say that you decided consciously to hold all your beliefs, but you did get them from somewhere, and you can change them!

Some of your beliefs, you might say are clearly unhelpful and are limiting "My life". And you can make things worse by resisting to experience those beliefs, creating tension in your being.

What do you believe?

This is why it is a useful exercise to make a "physical inventory" of your beliefs. Try writing down 20 useful (empowering) beliefs you hold; and then 20 unhelpful (holding you back or making life difficult) beliefs. Once they are on the table you can see why your life is enfolding the way it is. And you can make a decision about changing the unhelpful beliefs and adding new helpful beliefs.

Beliefs can be about anything: about what I want to experience – my place in the world – about the world/universe itself. You name it, and you can hold a belief about it!

Think back to some years ago, and you can probably recall some beliefs that you held back then. Today you might be a little embarrassed to admit you once held those beliefs. Beliefs do change – even/especially beliefs about yourself.

In the normal course you will experience a belief, and it will dissolve, so you can move on to a new experience.

Some beliefs may become more strong (you are more convinced) in time. Does that naturally happen as you get older? Does it happen because you are more convinced of the truth of our beliefs; or because you do not want to question them anymore – so you "lock into" them?

For corporate folk, try re-reading this newsletter and think "You" is you plural, i.e. the Company. What helpful and unhelpful beliefs do you (plural) hold?

Beliefs and goals go together

While beliefs are a statement of what you are in the process of becoming or doing: goals and action plans are a way to define and work towards what it is you want to experience, and have it manifest in the physical world.

Your aim may be to be a millionaire. You can make affirmations and create a belief, "I am a millionaire", and you will feel like a millionaire, and act like a millionaire. However, this may become a hollow feeling if there is not money in the bank to support it! So you will create a goal with a strategy to materially make it happen.

Conversely, if you have beliefs saying "I am poor", and you have goals and strategies that make you a lot of money: you will still feel poor!

You experience what you believe. Happiness, health and wealth are first created with beliefs, and supported by the physical world.
