Standing still is not an option! Being reborn is!

Standing still is not an option! Being reborn is! September 2005

  Dear Nigel,

I was talking to a man yesterday who had worked on himself to overcome his depression. He became aware as he did the work that, in some strange way, he considered his depression as an "old friend". And there was part of him that was reluctant, after many years of being together, to let go of the depression. "I began to get depressed thinking about not being depressed", he said.

As we are, we feel complete (100%). The moment we have to give something up, voluntarily or not, we go below 100%, and then we get an empty feeling. Often we become anxious and we quickly fill the void.

Some of the methods I have heard of to lose weight and stop smoking have actually emphasized the importance of not only renouncing, but at the same time starting something new so as not to create a hole.

Do you have any "old friends" that you could really do without?

In your company are there "old friends" that are holding you back?

Are you ready to give up an old habit and start something new?

When you are future orientated and moving forward - the rolling stone gathers no moss.

The moss, the "old friends", gets attached to what is stuck and not moving.

Organic things, like people, are not designed to stand still, they are designed to be in state of constant change. Things that do not change, as my daughters say, get "yuccckee" – like stagnant water!

Is there a little voice saying that there has to be a safe comfort zone somewhere, where one can fall back on what is known and does not change?

What Robert Kiyosaki says in one of his "Rich Dad" books is that when you decide to sell on your business, it is recommended to take a year out before starting another business. He goes on to say how difficult it was for him to unwind from the routine of work and do nothing. However, eventually he did manage to stop doing "things". And when he decided to enter into a new adventure, he says, it was like starting a new life.

Taking time out between businesses/jobs may be one option. What are the others?

Being "reborn" while continuing to work is also an option.

Are you becoming more aware and wiser as part of your daily work?

Do you want to start seeing every new project like a new adventure?

Are you doing as much as you would like, or do you need a jump start?

Nigel has written a book, based on his experiences in business, which leaves the industrial age in the dust, goes straight through the information age and beyond. You can read more about "Living in Company – reflections on life in the corporate world" at www.nigelbuxton.com.

Nigel works with people in business who want to do more with less – to make a greater contribution with less effort – to be more themselves with less holding them back.
