Nigel Buxton Update
Thought Traffic Congestion? Time to unplug? July 2005

  Dear Nigel,

"A penny for your thoughts" - how many?

It is said that we have about 80,000 thoughts each day. The bad news is that most of them are the same as we had the day before. The good news is that there is something that you can do to influence your thoughts.

You may be aware that when you feel stressed, under pressure, in panic, full of fear, worrying and such then the traffic of thoughts increases. Conversely, when you are fresh and relaxed you are not so aware of the thought activity and your better ideas bubble up.

What or Who are you?

It happened that twice in the last week I came across different sources saying, "You are what you think". If you recorded all your thoughts that would give you a photograph of what you are. BUT if I can influence my thoughts, then my thoughts are not who I am.

How would you like to free up some space on the thought highway and make room for more creative and innovative ideas?

Repeated thoughts repeated

Here are some areas where you may find some thought repeaters (repeated thoughts being generated):-

  • Worries: concerns: problems: doubt: "What is going to happen?", "I am not sure about ....", "What should I do?"
  • Fears: "Can I handle it?"
  • Secrets: "I don't want anyone to know this about me: is my secret well protected?"
  • Undone/Unsaid things: "I must not forget to do/say this", "I should have done/said that".

Focusing on your thought repeaters and pulling the plug on them (cutting off their energy) allows you to switch on to being more the person you want to be.

Do it until you are it - programming by actions

Last week you may have finished the four given sentences (Life is .... : My work is .... : Money is .... : My health is .... ), or you may like to spontaneously do it now. Have a fresh look at what you wrote, and ask yourself:

"Am I happy about how I perceive Life/My work/Money/My health?"

"Am I happy with the programmes I am running which are giving me this experience of Life/My work/Money/My health ?"

Try writing down your ideals for:

  • Life is ______________________
  • My work is __________________
  • Money is ____________________
  • My health is __________________

Now what four actions will you do this coming week so that these new attitudes start to become your everyday experience?

It is also said that it is what you do that defines who you are.

J*st do it, and you become it!

I work with people in business who want to do more with less - to make a greater contribution with less effort - to be more themselves with less holding them back.
