Nigel Buxton Update
Stress: the right kind? |

Dear Nigel,
Good Stress: Bad Stress
In my first Nigel Buxton Update I set out to avoid the
word "Stress", because of all the negative
connotations. But then a friend said to me, "You
know there is good stress and bad stress".
This reminded me of the story of tuning a guitar: if
the string is too loose, it will not play the note - if it
is too tight, it will snap. To play the note in tune, the
right amount of tension is needed.
Staying with the guitar, when you
have finished to play, you release the tension
to rest the instrument.
Do you release the tension from the strings when you
have finished to "play"?

Lions, flexibility and relax
The lion - sorry about the quick switch from music to
wildlife, but you know mental flexibility can be a
useful attribute - does not run around at high speed
all day long, but takes time to relax between bursts
of energy.

Work-horses and Race-horses
The work-horse pulls the plough steadily all day and
then rests. The race-horse, however, might find it
stressful to plod away all day; just as the work-horse
might not like to gallop giving everything he has got
over a short distance.
There is a reason why some people go into sales and
others into finance/accounting, for example.
Do you know and respect the kind of animal you are?

Do you have the right kind of stress?
I work with people in business who want to do more
with less - to make a greater contribution with less
effort - to be more themselves with less holding them
back.
