If you have a parrot perched on your shoulder ....

If you have a parrot perched on your shoulder - skip this December 2005

  Dear Nigel,

What we allow ourselves to do or not do comes down to how much self-esteem we have.

How much you believe in yourself?

What do you believe you can and cannot do?

When you look at, listen to or hear about a Donald Trump, a Richard Branson, a Robert Kiyosaki or a Anthony Robbins, or a Bill Gates what do you really think?

Listen to the reaction such personalities cause. Listen to that inner voice and it will tell you your thoughts and your beliefs about wealth, success, public image, security and more. Remember your thoughts and beliefs create the reality you are experiencing.

Are you saying (with that inner voice) to yourself things that are useful to you? Things that are helping you to get to where you want to go.

Or is that little voice saying things like:

  • "He is special" - (I am just an ordinary guy, I could never be like him);
  • "He is an exhibitionist" – (I am safer being quiet and not exposing myself);
  • "He is just a big ego" – (I am a humble guy, I don't need all that attention);
  • "He must be dishonest to have made so much money" – (Good people like me are not interested in having money);
  • "He has so much natural charisma" – (I was not born with such gifts)?

What is your little voice saying?

That little voice is telling you how you are seeing the world, and how you are "being" in the world. It is like a finger puppet sitting on your shoulder, or even a parrot!

What does your little voice say when you make the affirmation, "I can do anything I want".

Maybe that has woken up crowd of little voices and they are all shouting objections!

Be careful these little voices can sabotage your goals. And not achieving your goals is damaging for your self-esteem. Achieving goals is wonderful for self- esteem.

The first step is to get the objections out where you can see them. Once you can see them more than 50% of their power has been taken away. Once you catch the little voice saying "Only rich people have a villa in Spain", then you can question it, even interrogate it - a real inquisition! "Why not me. It is not impossible for me. I can do it. I will do it".

The little voices, or inner dialogue as it is sometimes called, hold so many messages about the "You" that is driving the bus. To go where you want, you have to get the little voices to sing with you in tune.

You change what the little voices are saying by pointing a finger at them and questioning them, and by making affirmations about what you want to create.

If the boat is filling up with water, it can be traumatic. Once you know the problem is a small hole in the port side that can be plugged by the wine bottle cork from the picnic, life takes on a new turn!

Nigel coaches people like you to freedom – freedom from limitations, freedom to do/be more, financial freedom, emotional freedom, freedom to be yourself.
